Aspects of the culture

The book was written in the end of the 19 century, so a lot of aspects aren't similar

  • The people were divided into working class and bourgeoisie;
  • Locomotive and steamer became the main sort of transport;
  • They have different values;
  • Clothes and accomodation also were different.

Filming the story

I am concerned that the film must start from  introducing George, Harris, Jerome and Montmorency, a fox terrier. The men are spending an evening in J.'s room, smoking and discussing illnesses  they fancy they suffer from. They conclude that they are all suffering from 'overwork' and need a holiday. A stay in the country and a sea trip are both considered. The country stay is rejected because Harris claims it would be dull, the sea-trip after J. describes bad experiences of his brother-in-law and a friend on sea trips. The three eventually decide on a boating holiday up the River Thames, from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford, during which they will camp, notwithstanding more of J's anecdotes about previous mishaps with tents and camping stovesThis scene is needed to explain the audience the reason of taking a trip.
Then we should descride the beginning of the trip. The friends set off the following Saturday. George must go to work that morning, so J. and Harris make their way to Kingston by train. They cannot find the right train at Waterloo Station  so they bribe a train driver to take his train to Kingston, where they collect the hired boat and start the journey. They meet George further up river at Weybridge.
Also I think that we should to include all the comedy set pieces from the book as they all are impotant for understanding the book's main idea. They are, for instance, the story of two drunken men who slide into the same bed in the dark, the Plaster of Paris trout in chapter 17 and the "Irish stew" in chapter 14 – made by mixing most of the leftovers in the party's food hamper; the story about Harris and George's packing a suitcase in chapter 4; Harris's singing a comic song in chapter 6 and etc.

Give opinions about the story

What I didn't like about the story

  • The characters are constantly complaining on their bad health and sometimes behave not like intelligent adults but like naughty children;
  • I expected ending to be much more positive

What I liked about the story

  • Certainly, it is a book which is worth to read due to its jolly narration. It contents lots of funny moments and make you laugh in every sentence. Jerome is a great writer as he could descride usual events in a way that make you read the book in one breath;
  • Lyric and really beautiful description of nature. I think not every writer is able to describe nature in a way that you won't fall asleep while reading.  It's a great gift for a writer;
  • The way the author wrote about historic events. Actually, I don't like  history as a sort of science because it contents so many different numbers which is hard to remember. However, Jerome was managed to pay my attention to discription of historic events and it wasn't boring to read such episodes.

Provide your own ending

Let's imagine absolutely different ending of this story.
When the friends stopped at Kempton Park, instead of disgraceful song Harris declaimed an episode from "Romeo and Julliet" and everybody was delighted. Nearby a theatre director had a rest, and when he heard Harris, he approached to the men and offered Harris to take part in a new play. He now feels better and decided to try his skills in the theatre. Montmorency met a little pekingese Nanny and fell in love with her. The friends are so satisfied with their pleasant trip that they decided to travel around the world the next time.

A letter

    I consider "Three men in a boat..." is rather humorous book and, fortunately, you won't find any tragic episode while you're reading it. That's why I think a letter should be written in a comic manner. So don't be very shocked...as I want to write a letter on behalf of a dog. Let's imagine that Montmorency learned to  express his thoughts by writing.
    Hello, Jay, my dear friend!
I can't believe I'm able to talk to you, it's a great gift from God I think. I have been waiting for this moment for all my life. I have so many things and questions which I want to discuss. Could you tell me how do you, people, cope with flea? Oh, it's impossible to scratch my body all the time, I can't stand them. And why don't    you run for cats? Isn't it interesting? Oh, no, I should stop it, I'm sorry, it's not important for you I know. I must tell you something about the river trip. Frankly speaking I wasn't satisfied with your desicion about taking a trip at first. I believed it would be boring and I couldn't imagine myself travelling in a boat. There isn't any cat or rat and anyway I could have a seasickness! But now I don't regret. I didn't think that your friends were able to behave in such a ridicolous and silly way. Everything that they started to do made me burst out of laughter as they couldn't cooperate at all. They weren't even manage to pack a suitcase without an incident. In general, I am pleased with the trip.
   I hope you'll answer me soon. Bark-bark! Sorry, I mean bye-bye.
   Yours,
   Montmorency
